Mangrove Boat Tour

The Sierpe River Mangrove Tour leaving out of Drake Bay is a great way to see Costa Rica’s largest stand of virgin mangroves. From the comfort and protection of a boat, you will slowly cruise through the Terraba- Sierpe National Humid Forest Reserve. With an area of more than 24,000 hectares, it is highly diverse in terms of biodiversity with four species of mangroves: Rhizophoraceae, Combretaceae, Pelliciera and Avicenniaceae. This flooded forest is home to more than 100 species of birds, including the mangrove Hummingbird Amazilia boucardi which are endemic to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

During the Mangrove Tour you can see wildlife such as crocodiles, tree frogs, boas, iguanas and river turtles. You might also see three species of monkeys including Squirrel Monkeys, Howler Monkeys and the White-Faced Monkeys, as well as sloths, coatis and the Silky Anteater. It is also possible to see many species of birds such as herons, owls, parrots and shorebirds which use this area as a place of nesting and feeding.

The Mangrove Tour leaves from Drake Bay by boat around 6:30 am, passes through the Sierpe River mouth (an adventure itself!) and then cruises through the countless channels crisscrossing this vitally important ecosystem. Your highly trained naturalist guide will surprise you by pointing out animals that can be very well camouflaged. We then stop in the town of Sierpe for lunch at a local restaurant or return to Drake Bay for lunch

A frog tour is exciting and if you are very lucky, you may see a Red-eyed Tree Frog, a Granular Poison Dart Frog and a Glass Frog on your tour… But you may also spot other animals like snakes, spiders, sleeping birds or nocturnal mammals on this 2 ½ hour tour which you can start any time after dark.
